The most important event of day 11 of the Chapter was the election of the new Minister General of the Order. The day began with Mass of the Holy Spirit which was celebrated by Cardinal Errazuriz Ossa, the Delegate of Pope Francis to the Chapter. In his homily, Cardinal Errázuriz recalled that allowing ourselves to be guided by the Holy Spirit will lead us to enliven and encourage others “to promote a new relationship with Creation and the good things of this world”. He prayed that the new Minister General and his Definitory would have “the grace-filled obedience and fearlessness of St. Peter, and be able to recognize the new paths that God continues to open in our time.”
In the first morning session, having completed the ritual that our legislation prescribes, the friars proceeded to the first ballot for the election of the new Minister. The result was the election by a very clear majority of Br. Michael A. Perry, who was greeted with a warm and prolonged applause from the entire Chapter Assembly.
The Chapter members then went in procession to the Portiuncula, where the new Minister General made his Profession of Faith and received the seal of the Order. All of the friars present came forward in line and embraced him in a fraternal promise of obedience, and afterwards Br. Michael gave the Blessing of San Francis to the people present, which included many members of the Franciscan Family.
The celebration continued with a wonderful lunch that brothers of the Seraphic Province hosted for the new Minister and the Chapter in the huge Portiuncula friary refectory.
Although the atmosphere was very festive, nonetheless the work of the Chapter had to continue in the afternoon, with meetings of the Conferences to discuss candidates for the other offices of Vicar General and Definitors General. The straw vote for the election of the Vicar General also took place. Following that, the presentation of Conferences continued. This time it was the turn of the North-Slavic and South-Slavic Conferences. Finally, the minutes of the first six sessions of the Chapter were approved.
After Evening Prayer and supper, the community recreation time was a further opportunity to continue the fraternal and festive atmosphere that had characterized the whole day.
