The 13th day of Chapter, the Vigil of Pentecost, was taken up with the election of the friars who, along with the Minister and Vicar General, make up the new Definitory, and whose task it is to govern the world-wide fraternity of the Order for the next 6 years.
Once the required rites and procedures had taken place, the friars began the voting process. Because of the large number of votes cast in the 8 elections, the count took all morning.
Just after 12 noon, the results were announced and the following were elected as Definitors General:
• Europe: Br. Antonio Scabio (Italy), Br. Ivan Sesar (Croatia) and Br. Lóránt Orosz (Hungary);
• Latin America: Br. Valmir Ramos (Brazil) and Br. Ignacio Ceja Jiménez (Mexico);
• English-Speaking Conference: Br. Caoimhín Ó Laoide (Ireland);
• Africa: Br. Nicodème Kibuzehose (Kenya);
• Asia and Oceania: Br. Lino Gregorio Redoblado (Philippines)
The 5 new Definitors already present at Chapter, having been asked by the Minister General, immediately and generously accepted the service requested of them by the friars. The Minister General then announced that he had been in telephone contact with Brs. Valmir Ramos, Ivan Sesar and Lóránt Orosz, and that they had each accepted the office of General Definitor. Those 3 friars will come to the Chapter in the coming week. Every one of the friars present gave a fraternal embrace to the newly-elected Definitors in an atmosphere of real celebration.
In the afternoon, in spite of the non-stop rain, the Chapter Members had time to explore Assisi – as well as passing on all the news to their home Provinces and Custodies.
Later on, Solemn Vigil of Pentecost was celebrated in the Basilica of the Portiuncula; this was a further opportunity to invoke the help of the Holy Spirit, the true Minister General of the Order.
