Sunday, May 31th, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity saw a large group of friars go on pilgrimage to the Shrine of La Verna where almost all of day 21 of Chapter was spent.
On arrival at the Shrine the friars participated in the celebration of Mass of the Most Holy Trinity at 11.00 a.m. which was presided over by the Minister Provincial of the Tuscany Province, Br. Guido Fineschi. Br. Guido said that the celebration of the Solemnity was not so much about a mystery that we cannot understand or explain, but instead is a call to experience and accept participation in the very depth of life, so that we may ourselves become a “living communion”. He also spoke of the fact that the Gospel life had been lived before the Gospels were actually written and similarly the life of individual friars and the Order will not be reformed by final documents; instead, the documents confirm what has been already been happening on our life’s journey. He invited all of us to be marked in our bodies by the passion of Christ – the love which brought him to the Cross and the pain which he bore – so that our flesh may be transformed into a sacrament of the redemption of the Lord.
After a fraternal meal and visits to the various locations of the Shrine, the friars participated in the procession to the Chapel of the Stigmata. Then, renewed by the radical encounter of St Francis with the crucified one, they returned to Assisi ready to engage with the last week of the General Chapter.
